Libraries want to lend e-books

Since Penguin is pulling out of Overdrive, libraries are losing what ground we had with eBook access for our patrons.  Please sign the petition to let publishers know that this is not okay. The goal is 25,000 signatures by May 15. Once you’ve signed, please promote this by sharing on Twitter, Facebook, and with those you know. Thanks!

Libraries Help Children Discover the Magic of Stories

I think that every book lover has a library story. There is some special library experience that stands out in your mind from childhood. Neil Gaiman, a popular children’s author, writes about going to the library when he was a child and the thrill of having such a vast resource of stories available. And if that was not enough, he discovered that he could check out at books from other libraries by requesting them through interlibrary loan. Essentially, the entire world of books was available for his use right in his own hometown.

I can vividly recall the library in my hometown. It was downtown on Broad Street near Mitchell College in Statesville, NC. You walked up the steps to the front door. The children’s room was on the right. The middle room housed the circulation desk and the adult books. All the magazines, newspapers and the library’s reference collection were kept on the room at the left. I remember being in primary school and getting the age where I could read for myself and choose my own books. There was a small area down a couple of steps and tucked away in a corner where the children’s fiction was kept. I would go in there and browse all the books. It felt like entering a secret hidden away place full of stories.

For children, libraries are magical places where imagination is nourished and somewhere in all of those books there is a story that is written just for you. Whoever you are, the library is a place where you can make your own discoveries, choose your own story, and you don’t have to worry about paying on your way out. Libraries are the first stop on a lifetime journey of learning and children’s librarians guide you along the way.

Here in Robeson County we are very fortunate to be welcoming a new Youth Services Librarian to our staff. Katie Huneycutt, our new librarian will be starting on Monday, February 6. She brings with her a wealth of knowledge of children’s literature, a degree in music, and years of experience in music education and library service. Katie holds a Master’s in Library Science from North Carolina Central University. We at the library are thrilled to have Ms. Huneycutt coming on board and I am sure that all of you in the community will just as pleased when you meet her. Watch our Website for details of upcoming programs.

Catie Roche is the Director of the Robeson County Public Library. You can reach her at croche@robesoncountylibrary.org

Welcome to RCPL’s new Website

Welcome to RCPL’s new site! We have lots of changes in progress at the library and we needed a new Website to help us share the news.

Our newest branch library, the McMillan Memorial Library in Red Springs, was not even represented on our former site. We are very glad that they have joined our system and happy to include them on the map.

This is very much a work in progress. Please visit often as we will be adding more information frequently.
